Accommodation in ‘The Artists’ Town’ of Kirkcudbright.

Kirkcudbright is situated on the banks of the River Dee and is an active harbour town, with its own fishing fleet, close to the Solway coast. The town itself is of historic interest with its association with Robert Burns, the “Glasgow Boys and Girls” and John Paul Jones the infamous pirate who, in the year 1798, despatched men to the mansion house on St Mary’s Isle to demand the family silver. Various articles of silver plate were handed over to them by the Countess of Selkirk and subsequently taken to France. There are various tales of how the silver was eventually returned to the Earl of Selkirk and John Paul Jones must have seen the error of his ways and in time became the founder of the American Navy.

The town offers all the amenities of shops, library, hospital and churches etc. and, in addition, the town is well situated to take advantage of the countryside with leisure activities available, including golf, sailing, fishing, bird/wildlife watching and walking. There is an indoor swimming pool in the town and, in close proximity, several safe, sandy beaches as well as picturesque rocky ones.

Kirkcudbright has a lively, friendly community and, in order to make your stay a memorable one, many interesting activities are staged and organized throughout the year eg. Jazz Festival in June, Scottish Nights in July and August and a fantastic Tattoo at the end of August. To see a comprehensive guide of what is happening in the town log on to the Kirkcudbright Artists’ Town Website and the site of the Summer Festivities gives a full list of events.
